In a way it foreshadows the theme of the Eric Clapton song Layla, which was based on a Fifth Century Persian poem, in which a man kills himself after being denied a relationship with his beloved.
The song was transposed to occur in Louisiana and has also been titled Fennario. It has also been recorded by Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead and many other folk oriented artists.
