We chase these things to try and satisfy our desires, but none of them can. The only thing that can give us a real and fulfilling life is God. I think what NF is getting at is that when we are chasing all these other things, we are not really living, almost like we're asleep. We end up unsatisfied, with a huge burden and a huge emptiness inside. We all need God to fill that hole, but sometimes we don't know it. NF says the "problem is that you don't know what you're after". I think we don't know that we are after God. We know we want security, but we look for it in money. We know we want acceptance, but we look for it in friends and fame. We know we want beauty, but we look for it aesthetically, starving ourselves and layering on makeup. We know we want a purpose, but we look for it in a job. These things won't give us what we're looking for. Only God can satisfy these desires. He holds us, accepts and loves us completely, beautifies our souls and gives us a purpose. NF is saying that we need to live for a reason, if we're not living for God, we're not really living at all. We are not experiencing "life to the fullest", we are not getting the most out of life. When we wander through our days for no reason, it's just like we're sleepwalking.
