They cannot understand each other, as they are two separate creatures with different languages. The side of the monster is shown when you play the song forwards, and the side of the sprite is shown when you play the song in reverse. When forwards, the ‘scary monster’ says, “Look at me, I’m a coward too, you don’t need to hide my friend, I am just like you.”
When you play the song in reverse, the ‘nice sprite’ is says, “I’m not just like you, you don’t need, I’m not just like you”, in denial of the monsters accusations that he is just like him. The sprite believes himself to be nice, perfect. He doesn’t want to believe that he is anything like the monster, and the monster doesn’t understand why the elf acts ignorant. The dubstep in between is them trying to communicate, but not having any success.
There is one last point of view in the song, which is the child, who is sitting on her bed in her room. The monster and sprite are fighting under her bed, and when the child hears monster, she screams “Oh my god!”, and when the song is in reverse (when the sprite talks) she screams, “Oh, No more! Who’s there?” Scary monsters and Nice sprites explained, everyone.
