In the song she is heard using the lyrics “what do you feel when you see the homeless on the street?”, followed by, “Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?”. This also brings up the issue of homelessness and the fact that Bush has done very little to address or even acknowledge it. After that she asks who does he pray for. This verse addresses her value of equality since they all pray to the same god. George Bush was a conservative Christian and it can be assumed that he prays at night. Pink questions his loyalty to his position and the citizens of America by being doubtful of his willingness to actual change the issues occurring in the United States, since he shows no inclination towards them. She also questions his stance on gay rights when she says, “And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?”. Pink has brought this up and links it to Bush’s family ties. Here Pink attempts to expose Bush for the person he is and is willing to live his family for the sake of politics. These social issues and how Pink writes about them to help restate the fact that Bush simply doesn’t care about issues that don’t directly concern him, and is looking out only for himself. Pink directly questions the No Child Left Behind Act when she says, “How can you say | No child is left behind? We’re not dumb and we’re not blind. |They’re all sitting in your cells…”.
These lyrics oppose the act by saying children are left behind and they are left to suffer, and they end up in jail. She also says the citizens of America are not “dumb” nor “blind.” This is an opposition because Pink believes Bush is dumb and blind to the voices of Americans. The war in Iraq comes up when Pink uses the lyrics, “How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?”. She is talking about when soldiers have to abruptly leave for the war, and then when they die overseas and the pain that causes for their families, especially when the war is for something they don’t believe in. By saying Bush can dream and think about himself throughout that just demonstrates his extreme oblivion of the issues of common Americans.
